Guide Review - Married Away

Married Away, which debuted on the Style Network in 2006, follows two couples per episode as plans for their destination wedding get underway.

In the premiere, one couple was bound for the Caribbean island of Curaçao and the other for Hawaii, and both were accompanied by their wedding planner.

The Curaçao couple were assisted, if you can call it that, by a wedding planner they brought from home who rarely showed up on time or when the bride needed him. And when he did, he argued with her. The Hawaii couple, who had known each other for three weeks before deciding to get married, put themselves in the hands of a bossy, over-organized wedding planner they also brought from home. She made the bride cry when her dress didn't fit and carried on as if it were the disaster of the century.

The major drama of the show was whether or not a seamstress the Hawaii wedding planner had lined up could fix the dress in time for the petite bride to have it zip. The suspense was underwhelming.

My takeaway from this show is that a wedding planner can be an unnecessary expense. If a couple has the ability to choose their own destination and resort to marry at, buy wedding wear without being led by the hand, and ask the right questions to ensure their wedding is legal, it seems to me they can organize their own event.

The most helpful person in the show was the wedding coordinator at the Curacao Marriott. She knew what she was doing — and her services were free to the couple.
